近づけたかった 本物の花
作りたかった 枯れない花
いつまでも 枯れないそんな花を造りたかった
一枚一枚の花びらに
ひとつひとつの葉脈に
命をふきこもう
本物の花に近づけるよう
心をこめて
I’d have liked to make it come close to … a real flower.

小さい頃は夢見ていた
何でもできる魔法の杖
変身できるコンパクト
ピンチを救うヒーローや
クリスマスのサンタクロース
I was dreaming a lot in my girlhood;
A magic wand I can do everything with,
A compact I can transform myself with,
A hero coming to me when it comes to the pinch, and
Santa Clause in Christmas.
だんだん物事がわかってきて
ひとつ ひとつ 夢は消えたけど
ひとつ ひとつ 出来ることは増えていく
Being worldly-wise as the days go by,
Such dreams disappeared … one … by one; but
What I can do appears … one … by one.
魔法の杖はなかったけれど
何かを作りだせる手や力が
変身できるコンパクトはなかったけれど
なりたいものになれるってことがわかったんだ
The magic wand didn’t ever appear, but
My hands and abilities do instead.
The compact I could transform myself with didn’t ever appear, but
Now I know I can be whatever I’d like to be instead.
願えばきっと きっとなれるよ
夢見た気持ち 忘れなければ

信じた何かに きっとなれる

鏡は映す ありのままを
顔は語る 積年の気持ちを
A mirror reflects… everything as it is.
A face tells… many deep-seated feelings.
生き方
心のあり方が
刻まれ映し出されてくる
長い年月をかけてつくられる心の造形
The way to live and
The state of mind are being
Etched and reflected.
The formation of mind over the years.
鏡に映った自分の顔
年をとったとき
自分の顔に責任が持てるだろうか

At a late time of my life,
Can I ever be responsible for it?
目は 心の窓
The eyes are … the window of the mind.

大人になってから読めなくなったよ
マッチ売りの少女の物語
最後まで読もうと思っても
涙でぐちゃぐちゃになって 見えないんだ文字が
その続きを 聞いていた子どもが語るんだ
たんたんと 最後まで 涙もみせず
I’ve never been able to read it since I matured.
It is the story of A Little Match-girl.
Though I tried to do to end,
Dissolving into tears … I can’t see the print.
The next part … A child who was listening to me begins to tell
With a wise look … to end … with no tears.
雪の中
降りしきる雪の中
はだしで歩きマッチを売っていた少女
売れるまで 家に帰ることも許されず
必死にマッチを売って歩く
暖かい家の中に憧れながら
暖かい食事に憧れながら
擦ったのは 一本のマッチ
In the snow,
In the heavily falling snow,
There was a girl walking barefoot to sell matches.
Until they are sold out … she wasn’t allowed to come back home, so
Wandering about to sell matches desperately.
Craving for a warm room,
Craving for a warm dish in there,
She struck … A Match.
今は売るものは違っても
ゴミの山をあさって
危険と隣り合わせで生きていく子どもたち
時代は変わっても
マッチ売りの少女は なくならない
マッチ売りの少女の物語は 終わらない
Now, though goods to sell are different,
Scavenging on a junk pile,
There are children living next to the danger.
Now, though the time is different,
A Little Match-girl is … sure living.
The story of The Little Match-girl is … not finished yet.
暖かい布団の中
サンタさんを待ちながら
眠れる子どもになってくれたらいい
ぐっすり眠れる
そんな子どもたちになってほしい
大人になってから そんな事を思い
涙するよ
この幸せが続いてほしいと
どの親も同じだと
クリスマスイブに思うよ
明日の心配なんかすることのない
悲しい思いをすることのない子どもになってと
サンタさんが もしいるのなら
その子のそばにきてほしいと
マッチ売りの少女の物語が 遠い昔話で
語られる日になってほしい と
Tucking him/herself up in bed,
Waiting for Santa,
I want every child to sleep like that.
Promised sound sleep,
I want every child be in such home.
Since I matured … I can’t get that out of my mind, which
Makes me cry.
This happiness could be continued forever …
Wished by any parent; I think that on the day of
Christmas Eve.
Every child wouldn’t worry about the future and
Wouldn’t make sad memories…
If there were … Santa Clause,
I would like have HIM be next to such a poor child.
The story of The Little Match-girl … must have gone afar,
Wishing … such a happy day … sure would come!

せいのたかさは いっとうしょう
しらんでくるまちを いちばんはやくみて

Around here,
Much … taller than … the tallest … building,
I am a champion … in the competition of heights.
I see our town turning gray of dawn … earlier than anyone, and;
I assure myself of the last moment of a day … in our town being dyed orange hue.

呪文のような言葉にも聞こえ
祈りのような言葉にも聞こえる
Sounds like a spell and
Sounds like a wish.
そろばんが
中国から伝わった時代は
漢数字で縦書き表記をする時代だった
問題を読む人と
計算する人から生まれた言葉だそうだ
An abacus was

気休めにしかならない言葉で別れたのは
沈丁花の花の香りがまだ残る頃だった
Something good… will happen… soon or later.
There we parted with my words used to comfort left
While the smell of daphnes was lingering behind.
あなたは いつも人のことばかり心配していた

のどかで美しい世界
What a serene and beautiful world!
青空に忍びよってきた忍者雲が
あたりを荒天へと変えた
最近の天気は不安定なときが多い
まるで人間の社会を映しているみたいに
Suddenly a black ninja-cloud appeared,
Changed it a foul weather.
Recently the weather is unsettled:
Which looks a reflection of us humans.
ひとつの時代の終わりには
隠し切れないものを隠そうとして
たくさんの膿が溜まってくる
憎しみや苦しさが
コールタールのような暗い闇をつくり
覆っていくようだ
At the crucial end of every epoch,
Trying to conceal something dirty so much,
Lots of black pus contains.
Enmity and distress
Seem to make darkness like coal-tar.
美しいものを美しいと感じられる
そんなあたりまえの世界で
いつまでも暮らしていきたい
I’d like to honestly feel something beautiful;
Although it must be difficult,
I’m dying to live in such a world forever.

「雨上がりの蜘蛛の巣」
“A Spider Web After the Rain”
風に飛ばした糸の先
しっかりどこかにつかまって
巣を作り始める蜘蛛でした
行ったり来たり糸をはり
きれいなきれいな巣ができました
A thread carried by the wind,
Grabbing something;
A spider began making her web.
Going back and forth,
Her beautiful work was done.
風になびき
透き通る美しさ
罠にかかる獲物をじっと待っています
The beautiful crystal is
Fluttering in the wind.
Waiting for her diet silently.
しとしと降る雨が
きれいにできた巣を濡らします
She is floating in a drizzling rain.
光の玉のネックレス
光の星のプラネタリウム
A sparkling necklace.
A planetarium full of stars.
とんぼや蝶は
罠にかからずすみました
A dragonfly and a butterfly came, but
They were safe, because…

「まるくなって」
“To Become Round”
むなしく さびしいそんなとき
からだを くるんと まるめて うずくまる
When feeling hollowness and sad
I roll myself, crouching down.
とくん とくん なみだつおと
いきている あかし
I hear the sound of my heart beating: pound, pound and pound;
A sign of living.
まるくなるのは しぜんのげんり
みずは どんなに小さくわかれても
どんなに大きくなろうとも
まるくなろう とする
To become round should be a law of nature.
However smaller drops water was scattered into or,
However bigger one it was;
It would quickly become round.
まるくなるのは
大切なものをまもっているからかな
地球がまるいのは
たくさんのいのちをまもっているからかな
Imagine - that to become round may be
To protect something precious.
Imagine - that why our planet is round may be
To protect ITS numberless lives.
まるくなって うずくまって

だいすきなおひさまにちかづきたくて

Tomatoes
As they’d like to reach their most favorite sun;
Basking in the sun,
Turning red.
あかい あかい まっかな
とまと
あつさにたえて

だいすきなおひさまをおもうこころで

Red, red or crimson
Tomatoes
Bearing up under boiling heat,
In the parched soil,
They only think about their most favorite sun;
Which makes them so sweet.

一日の終わりを飾る夕焼けは
なぜこんなに美しいのだろう
大きく沈む太陽に
茜色に染まる空
瑠璃色にうつろっていく空に
うかぶ一番星
The sunset crowns the end of a day
It is so beautiful ? why?
The big sun slowly sinking is tinged with
Rosy flush; in a twinkle changing into
Ultramarine; in which
The first star is looking at me.
美しいものを見ているのに
なぜ なみだが出てくるのだろう
つっぱってふんばっていた
心のなかの氷が
すーーっと溶けて流れていく
Though I am watching such beautiful things,
My eyes are fill with tears ? why?
The big defiant ice in my mind; soon turning into drops,
Running over my cheeks.
美しい夕焼けは
今日を一日頑張った
私への
空からの贈り物
This beautiful sunset today is
Something special after
Hectic all my day today ? it sure is

「木のなげき」
“The Wails of a Tree”
時代の流れというものは
どういうものなのでしょうか
私はもう何年も同じ場所に立ちこの場所から
多くの事をただみているだけですが
ここ数年とても流れが速いように感じます
The stream of time is…
My age is telling me what it is.
After just only standing here for a long time,
After just only watching many things;
Now I feel the time going by faster than before in recent years.
長い冬があけると
待ってましたとばかりに
薄紅色を咲かせます
Just as long winter is going,
As if I was craving for spring,
I am rushed into wearing pale-pink flowers.
満開の花に道ゆく人も私をみて
きれいね と言ってくれるのです
Passers-by watching me in full bloom
Sure say to me, “How lovely!”
風に舞う花びらも
うす緑の新緑も美しいものです
My scattering petals in the wind look nice,
As well as light-green young leaves of mine.
夏に毛虫が多いのは私の弱点です
Lots of caterpillars in summer make me worry
They also do passers-by.
秋に私の衣は赤や黄色に染まり
散りゆく命を輝かせますが
散った衣がコンクリートの上をはい
ゴミになるばかりになりました
In autumn, my clothes glow red and yellow, and…
They shine in their fatal hour; but…
After rustling on a concrete path,
They come to only refuse themselves in the end.
家人は葉を拾い集め
隣人に申し訳ないから と
私の手足を多く切り落しました
My family begins gathering my leaves at first-
Feels sorry to their neighbors…
Lots of limbs of mine were lopped off-at last…
自然のサイクルが崩れると
誰かが犠牲になることを
私は自分で知ったのです
As soon as the balance of natural circulation is lost,
Someone among us must fall a victim…
I knew who it was.
「ゆびきりげんまん」
“To Pledge by Hooking Little Fingers ”
約束したよ
Never break our promise.
小指と小指をからませて
Hooking each other’s little fingers,
ゆびきりげんまん
One of the biggest pledges!
約束したことは守るのが当たり前って思っていた
Long ago, though pledging was in front of awful Gods,
お母さんと子どもの約束
Between Mom and her child,
友達と友達の約束
Two friends and
恋人と恋人の約束
Two lovers.
約束を守らなかったら
Long long ago, if we had broken our pledges,
針を千本のまされる
The god must have forced us drink thousands of needles.
ゆびきりは小指を切断
HE must have done us cut our little fingers.
げんまんは げんこつを一万回
HE must have done us rain ten thousand blows;
必ず守るという約束の証
Which must have been a testimony of promise.
人々の前で約束する公約
Which must have been a public commitment.
マニュフェストとカタカナに変換され
It’s been converted into manifestos and katakana-notation; and
いとも簡単に破られる
Soon it would have been vanished.
信じては破られ
The moment we believe it, it’s gone away.
破られては幻滅し
Only despond remains;
またか と小さくなっていく希望
Despond becomes bigger; a hope becomes smaller and smaller.
絵にかいた餅は餅のまま
A pie drown on a paper never ever change into a real one;
飾られるだけで手に取ることも出来ない
Far from eating it, we can never even touch it forever.
うそついたら
If a politician had told a lie to us,
はり せんぼん の〜ますっ
WE must have forced him drink thousands of needles.
破っても実行されない罰
Where is PUNISHMENT?
約束なんて破るためにあるんでしょ
How could anyone believe PROMISE on the earth?
ゆびきりげんまんも
How could children believe HOOKING LITTLE FINGERS?
あまりしなくなった子どもたちが
Instead,
コンピュータにフラグをたてる
I saw them setting a flag on their PC-games.
ひとときのぬくもりの不確かな約束より
Rather than a forgettable promise only for a joyful moment,
ぬくもりはないけれど確かにある約束の印
I’m eager for unchangeable commitment dry as dust.
ゆびきったぁ
HE is cutting your little finger, don’t you see?
つながっていた小指さえ断ち切って
Your little finger is missing now, don’t you see?
自由になった約束の文字
Only the letter of PROMISE remains invisible, you see?

だんだん道は狭くなるけれど
Though this path is becoming narrower and narrower,
どんどん空は近くなる
The sky is coming close.
一番上までのぼったら
If I could reach the top,
すこしだけとどきそうになる青い空
The sky would sure be within kissing distance.
夏がくるよと風がささやく
I meet the ear … The wind is whispering. “Summer is coming soon.”

もうなくなったと思っていたのに
Though I believed that can became empty,

What came out from the can are …
どれも白い飴ばかり
Every drop is white.
かけらだけしか残らない赤 緑 黄色の飴
My favorite ones colored red, green and yellow are all crumbs.

I didn’t prefer it when I was a child. Hum…

A few crumbs of my old memories appeared,

They are making a noise; saying “we are more and more.”

人の迷惑かえりみず
Ignoring the people around them…

They are poking our garbage bags.
時々道路にでるけれど
They sometimes swoop on a road…
車が来ても ひとにらみ
Glaring at even a car.
こわいものなど 何もなし
They fear nothing at all.
夕方仲間と電線で
In the evening, on an electric wire,
重い体も何のその
Not caring about their heavy body,
バランスとって止まります
They can perch on it without reeling.
井戸端会議開催中
They are chewing the fat now.
早朝出勤早めの帰宅
Coming into work in the early morning, early coming back home.
真夜中だって何のその
Even in the midnight, they enjoy their time…
午前2時のひと騒ぎ
Making a row at 2:00 in the morning.
明るい都会の空の下
Under blue urban sky,
嫌われても 嫌われても
No matter how much they are hated, again and again,

But they live energetically and wisely.

In the scooped sea-water
小さな生き物が泳いでいた
I saw a little creature
